Samuel Johnson Dukes, 88, died Monday, April 16, 2018. Born in Reeseville, SC on September 24, 1929, Mr. Dukes was the son of the late Peter Hildebrand Dukes and Katie Mildred Berry. He retired from the United States Army as a Chief Warrant Officer after 22 years having honorably served his country during WWII and Korea. He was later employed for 20 years as a regulatory compliance manager with Banker's Trust, which later became Bank of America. Mr. Dukes was a pillar of Belmont Baptist Church, a member for 50 years serving as a Deacon, choir member, treasurer and served on almost every committee within the church. His favorite hobbies included working in his garden and fishing.
Mr. Dukes is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty T. Dukes, along with their children, Keith Dukes (Diane) of John's Creek, GA, Craig Dukes (Pam) of Blythewood, SC; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Tucker (Alan), Patrick Dukes (Lauren), Haley Wheeler (Brad), Kristina Werner (Chris), and Taylor Dukes; along with two great-grandchildren, Lincoln Wheeler and Samuel Tucker. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dukes was predeceased in death by his daughter, Carol Joan Dukes; and his sister, Thelma Bratcher.
The funeral service for Mr. Dukes will be held Thursday, April 19th at 12:00 at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext in Columbia. Interment with full military honors will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 11 o'clock.
