SFC Russell Brunell Chambers, US Army (Ret.), 88, of Columbia, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2024. Born in Taylorsville, Georgia, on July 27, 1935, he was a son of the late Ida Mae Lumpkin Chambers. He was a long-time member of Eastwood Baptist Church, which later became Hope Baptist Church.
SFC Chambers was the loving husband of 66 years to the late Roxie Anne Chambers. He graduated from Taylorsville High School and on his 17th birthday, he enlisted into the United States Army. SFC Chambers proudly served 20 years and retired as Sergeant First Class on his 37th birthday. Following his military career, he began working for AT&T and eventually retired from Bellsouth. Free time was spent fishing, with his grandchildren, or traveling with his wife. SFC Chambers was strong-willed, full-blooded Army, and sometimes stubborn but his greatest joy in life was his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his sons, Russell Dean Chambers (Susan) and Kenneth Daniel Chambers; daughter, Linda Susan Chambers; grandchildren, Matthew Daniel Chambers (Lauren), Russell Brunell Chambers II, Rachael Lauren Spangler (Jason), Michael Ellingsen, and Drake Kelon Brown; great-grandchildren, Oscar Chambers, Lily Chambers, Remi Spangler, and James McMillan; brother-in-law, Ronald Wiles; and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Wright Chambers. Along with his wife and mother, he is preceded in death by his son, Stephen Charles Chambers; infant daughter, Jennifer Lynn Chambers; brother, Richard Chambers; and his beloved uncle, Gordon Chambers, who was like a father to him.
The Funeral Service for SFC Chambers will be held at 2 o'clock on Thursday, June 27th, at Hope Baptist Church, 2117 Clemson Road, Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 o'clock. Burial will take place at 4 o'clock at Bowman Memorial Cemetery, 181 Lillie Beth Lane, Bowman, SC 29018. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are Matthew Chambers, Russell Chambers, Jason Spangler, and James McMillian.
