Obituary

SFC Norman Richard Helblig, U.S. Army (Ret.), 86, of Columbia, died Monday, April 14, 2025. Born on August 31, 1938, in Bluffton, Indiana, he was a son of the late John Franklin Helblig and the late Mary Torina Davis.

Mr. Norman was a dedicated and honorable man whose life was built on love, service, and strength of character. He cherished his family and took great pride in his years of service with the United States Army. A true patriot, he served his country faithfully and was recognized many times for his exceptional dedication and valor. Throughout his military career, Mr. Norman earned numerous medals, decorations, and ribbons, including the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, two Overseas Service Bars, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Army Service Ribbon, three Overseas Service Ribbons, and the Sharpshooter Qualification Badge for the M-16. These honors reflect the deep commitment and courage he showed during his time in uniform. Beyond his military achievements, Mr. Norman will be remembered for his love, humility, and the quiet strength he carried throughout his life. He was a devoted husband, a proud and caring father, a wonderful brother, and a man of deep integrity. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, and his memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to share in his life.

Survivors include his sons, Michael Helblig, Roddney Helblig, and Richard Helblig; grandchildren, Zach Mains and Mary Elizabeth Helblig, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Faye Helblig and his daughter, Misty M. Helblig.

The funeral service for Mr. Helblig will be held at 2 o'clock, Thursday, April 17, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC, 29223. Burial will follow the service in Memorial Gardens of Columbia at 3 o'clock. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 o'clock.
