Shirley Wilburn Deasy, 73, of Columbia, passed away on November 29, 2016. She was born in 1943 in the state of Alabama and was one of 10 children. She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Richard Deasy; a daughter, Sherry Knight (Robert); two grandsons, Jeremy Neal and Cody Knight (Reece); three sisters and four brothers. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two siblings.
In her early thirties, Shirley's athletic ability was noticed by a high-ranking officer at Fort Jackson. He suggested she try the sport of golf. Shirley fell in love with the game and became a member of the Fort Jackson Golf Club in 1976. She loved playing competitively, but always as an honorable opponent. Whether playing for a "dime a hole" or in an important tournament event, Shirley always abided by the rules of the game and would encourage her fellow competitors. If a partner in a team match was having a difficult time, never did she castigate or blame her partner for their poor performance. She played in several highly competitive golf tournaments and to her credit won 16 Ladies Championships at Fort Jackson, City of Columbia Ladies Championships and competed outside South Carolina in the Southeast Golf Division. She had the opportunity to qualify as a professional in the LPGA but declined as she loved the fellowship of the game and believed her true competitor was the golf course. She was once offered a position to teach and mentor aspiring young golfers in Korea. Shirley's love for golf, her companionship, and her willingness to play golf with anyone at any playing level, will be missed.
The service for Mrs. Deasy will be held at 1 o'clock, Monday, December 5th, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia with the Rev. Dr. Odell Belger officiating Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
The family suggests memorials be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
