Sidney Edward Newton, 93, of Columbia, died Saturday, October 11, 2014. Born in Savannah, GA on February 18, 1921, he was a son of the late Warren J. Newton and Lila Baker Newton.
Mr. Newton was a Veteran of the US Army, having served in Europe during WWII. He was a member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church, as well as the Dutch Fork Masonic Lodge AFM #402. Mr. Newton retired in 1983 after 24 years as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. In retirement, he enjoyed working in his yard and meeting his friends for coffee each morning at the old St. Andrews Pharmacy, and later at the Lizard's Thicket.
Survivors include his loving wife of 71 years, Mary Cleo Givens Newton; daughters, Judy Hall of Chapin and Barbara Newton of Columbia; sisters, Lillian Lever of Rincon, GA, Lucille Zeigler and Ann Todd both of Savannah, GA, and Doris Rucker of Guyton, GA; and granddaughter, Melissa Hall of Lexington, SC. In addition to his parents, Mr. Newton was preceded in death by five brothers.
The funeral service for Mr. Newton will be held at 11 o'clock, Wednesday, October 15, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia, with The Rev. S. Wayne Cole officiating. Interment will follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10 o'clock. The family suggests memorials may be made to the Harvest Hope Food Bank, PO Box 451, Columbia, SC, 29202, or to the charity of one's choice.
