Sidonia Nachtigal, 83, of Blythewood, died Friday, May 31, 2013. The daughter of Marius and Valeria Ciugudean, she was born in Alba-Iulia, Romania on June 18, 1929. Mrs. Nachtigal graduated from the University of Cluj, Faculty of Biology and did research at the Oncology Institute in Bucharest. She taught Genetics at the University of Bucharest and worked at the Cantacuzino Institute producing polio vaccine. In 1981 she moved with her family to Columbia SC where she worked as a research specialist at the USC School of Medicine.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Maurice Nachtigal; daughters, Carmen Almasan and Alina Kale; son, Noel Nachtigal; granddaughters, Nicole and Sydney Kale; sons-in-law, Alex Almasan and Doug Kale; and daughter-in-law, Malin Young. Memorials should be addressed in care of Trinity United Methodist Church, PO Box 864, Blythewood, SC, 29016, for the "Sidonia Ciugudean Association", which has been established in her name to build a nursing home in Vingard, Romania.
The funeral service for Mrs. Nachtigal will be held 2 o'clock, Monday, June 3rd at Trinity United Methodist Church, corner of Boney & Blythewood Road, Blythewood, with the Rev. Dr. Cathy Jamieson-Ogg officiating. Interment will follow in the Hebrew Benevolent Society Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 until 6 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia.
