Obituary

Silas Wendell Holmes, 93, of Columbia, died on Sunday, March 23, 2025. Born on January 24, 1932, in Bug Hill, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Glenn Foy Holmes and Ida Gore Holmes.

Mr. Holmes honorably served his country in the US Navy as a jet Navigator. He was a 1959 graduate of The University of South Carolina, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in accounting. Mr. Holmes retired from SCE&G in 1986 after more than 30 years of employment.

He was an avid golfer, a proud supporter of the Gamecocks, and a poker opponent you never wanted to face. He was also an immensely gifted artist who enjoyed painting in his free time.

In addition to his hobbies, he was a devoted member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he served as Treasurer and found great joy in its fellowship. His faith and church community were a source of deep connection and purpose. He was also a recent recipient of their 'Quilt of Honor' for his service to his country.

Above all else, Silas treasured his family. He raised his children alongside his loving wife of fifty-two years, Doris Holmes, whom he met and fell for at a barn dance in Tamassee, South Carolina. He took great pride in supporting his children's interests, serving as a statistician for his sons, Wendell and Brad, during their years in the Belvedere Baseball League, and later for his grandson, Trey, as he played for Trenholm Park.. His dedication and encouragement helped them excel in the sport. When his daughter, Pam, played the piano, his unwavering support allowed her to flourish. He was always her biggest fan.

Most affectionately known as Pop Pop, he was a hero to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He never missed a birthday and shared his wisdom in the most special ways—teaching them the art of growing tomatoes, a love for Western films, and how to deliver the perfectly-timed punchline

He is survived by his children, Pamela Holmes Dickens (Richard) of Columbia, Silas Wendell Holmes, Jr.(Teri) of Columbia, and James Bradford Holmes of Fountain Inn, SC. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Madison Altman (Brian), Jordan Dickens, Harris Dickens, Rebecca Scout Holmes (Joe Gorman), Sarah Frances Holmes, and Silas Wendell "Trey" Holmes, III, his great grandchildren, Elizabeth Altman, Hayden Altman, and Pippi Holmes-Gorman, and his "BFF" of many years, Jane Holmes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-two years, Doris Stover Holmes, his daughter-in-law, Paula Dunn Holmes, and his brothers, Donald and Dale Holmes.

He had a wonderful network of friends at Wildewood Downs, including Sandy Gundlach, Don and Nancy Hyatt, Ernie Banner and many others who were a great source of joy for Silas these last four years.
