SSG Jay Irvin Girton, US Army (Ret.), 64, of Columbia, died on Saturday, January 13, 2024. Born November 3, 1959, in Lamar, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Archie and Helen Girton. SSG honorably served his country for 20 years in the US Army. During his enlistment he was a member of The Old Guard and Ranger Regiment where he received many commendations for his meritorious service. He had a passion for the great outdoors and enjoyed deer hunting. He took great pleasure in riding his motorcycle, especially on mountain trips. SSG Girton was an amateur radio operator, handle AA3TE, who made many lasting relationships with other fellow amateur operators. He enjoyed life in Columbia, great company, and black coffee.
SSG Girton is survived by his son, Joshua Aaron Girton, as well as many extended family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two siblings, Gary Girton and Alice Girton Williams.
The funeral service for SSG Girton will be held at 12:30 o'clock, Friday, January 26th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext, Columbia, SC. Burial with full military honors will follow at 2 o'clock at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia.
The family will receive guests at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 11:30 o'clock.
