Obituary

SSG Richard Norman Hardin, Jr., US Army (Ret.), 97, of Columbia, died on Friday, December 20, 2024. Born on July 28, 1927, in Lumberton, NC, he was a son of the late Richard Norman Hardin, Sr. and Rebecca Eva Allen Hardin. SSG honorably served his country for more than 20 years in the US Army, where he received many commendations for his meritorious service. Following his military career, he was employed for the State of South Carolina as a warehouse manager at the Midlands Center.

SSG Hardin was a humble servant of God and lived his life serving his Savior and sharing the love of Christ. A caring, godly man, he touched and blessed the lives of many through crafting wooden crosses and giving them to people in his community. He was a member at Dentsville Baptist Church for over 60 years and most recently Jackson Creek Baptist Church. SSG Hardin was a master mason and member of the Fort Jackson Masonic Lodge for nearly 70 years. He was also a member of the American Legion.

SSG Hardin was the devoted husband of the late Betty Jean Hardin for 71 years. Throughout their marriage, they enjoyed singing, square-dancing, and bowling together. As well as outdoor activities such as fishing, camping, and waterskiing.

Survivors include his son, Michael Dean Hardin (Taffy); as well as his three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Along with his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his daughter, Connie Darlene Carter and six siblings.

The funeral service for Mr. Hardin will be held at 1 o'clock on Monday, December 30th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC with Pastor Jeff Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC.

The family will receive guests one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
