Stacy Lee Smith, Jr., of Columbia, South Carolina , age 76, died peacefully in his home, after a brave battle with cancer.
Stacy was born in Savannah, Georgia and later moved to Hardeeville, S.C., for part of his childhood. He later returned to Savannah and graduated from Jenkins High School and Armstrong State College with a degree in Accounting.
He enjoyed a 38 year career with Internal Revenue Service, majority of those years as a Senior Employee Plans Specialist with the Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division. Not only did he audit employer sponsored retirement plans but he provided extensive training programs for agents to learn how to conduct examinations and navigate IRS Internal systems. Stacy also represented the IRS in various speaking engagements for nationwide forums, professional groups and pension seminars. Due to his many years of audit experience and leadership in various positions within Employee Plans, he was held in high regard by his collegues at the IRS and those outside the organization.
Upon retirement, Stacy pursued his lifetime passion for boating and fishing. As an orator, he possessed a natural aptitude for storytelling and joke telling. Known for possessing the right tool for the job, he gave of his time and expertise to others. He also volunteered his talents at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church and prepared tax returns for seniors through AARP. Recognizing the needs of others, Stacy was a lifetime blood donor with The Red Cross.
Stacy was preceded in death by his parents, Stacy and Udell Ryals Smith and a sister, Julie Smith Rogan.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Marilyn Fletcher Smith; son Jeff Smith and his wife Tina, daughter Amanda Smith and her partner Patrick Waddell; aunt Sheryl Shipley; grandchildren; Hampton, Sullivan, Charlotte Smith; and many nieces, nephews, grand niece, nephew, and cousins.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, August 25, 2025 at 10:30 am, Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church, 120 Marydale Lane, Columbia, S.C. Visitation will held prior to the funeral from 9:30 -10:30 am in the church narthex.
Burial will be in The Pinckney Family Cemetery, 2-74 Calhoun Plantation Blvd., Okatie, South Carolina, 29909, on Tuesday, August 26 at 1:00 pm.
