Obituary

Susan Stoll Herin, 91, of Columbia SC died May 4, 2023. Born in Sumner, Illinois on May 18, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Charles G. Stoll and Isabelle Bennett Stoll.

Susan graduated from Lawrenceville High School in 1949 and attended Milwaukee Downer College where, "I thought perhaps I could be a better music teacher than the last one I had, so I wanted to major in music" which led her to transfer to DePauw University where she graduated with her Bachelor of Music Degree in 1953. Her love for teaching music at Vincennes University inspired her to enroll at the University of Indiana to pursue a master's degree in music. During her time there she met a "skinny young college professor from the University of South Carolina" who was there working on his Ph.D. Love took ahold, and she married John S. Herin in 1955, and while neither finished their advanced degrees they each pursued their passions in Columbia for the remainder of their careers. Susan taught piano at home for generations of students; and was a church musician at Forest Lake Presbyterian, Covenant Presbyterian, First Presbyterian, and Eastminster Presbyterian Churches. She was active in the development of the Columbia Philharmonic Orchestra serving on its board and the Symphony League for decades. She was also a devoted member of the P.E.O., a philanthropic organization supporting women's education, serving in many roles including state president, and helping establish new chapters. John and Susan moved to Mount Pleasant SC in 2006 and Susan returned to Columbia in 2020 after John's death.

She now joins her husband, John, of 64 years in the heavenly choir of angels. She left her legacy of music with, and is survived by, her children Chuck Herin, of Winnsboro, SC, Amy Herin and her husband Ron Hildreth, of Columbia, SC, Sam Herin and his wife Tamie Herin, of Seneca, SC; granddaughters, Lauren Byrd and her husband Thomas Byrd, of Frederick, MD, Hannah Mundy and her husband Calvin Mundy, of Charleston, SC; Dr. Madison Herin of Arlington, VA; and step-granddaughter Dr. Amy Hildreth and her husband Herbert Krabel of Columbia, SC; as well as great-granddaughters Margaret and Edith Byrd, and Maya Mundy, and great-grandsons Simon and Max Krabel, and Hastings Mundy.

The family would like to thank the loving team at Still Hopes for the care and compassion demonstrated during her time as a resident.
