Susan Landrum McCarthy, 62, of Columbia, exited stage left on June 21, 2024.
Born October 31, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina, Susan was a graduate of Richland Northeast High School, the University of South Carolina, and Winthrop University. She recently celebrated 40 years of teaching in Richland School District Two, where she touched the lives of thousands of students and sought to instill in each of them a lifelong love of reading—she believed that those who "hated" to read hadn't found the right book yet.
Susan will be remembered not only for her love of reading, but also musical theatre and life-long addictions to Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and sweet tea. She took joy in beating her family at Wheel of Fortune and clearing whole categories on Jeopardy. Her future plans include attending Freddie Mercury, Prince, and Jimmy Buffett concerts in Heaven and flying across the sky on her broomstick on Halloween.
Susan's family was the cornerstone of her life, and her legacy will live on through them. She is survived by her daughter, Katie McCarthy of Atlanta, GA; husband, Daniel McCarthy of Columbia, SC; mother, Gloria Landrum of Columbia, SC; sister, Nancy (Jim) Robnett of Safety Harbor, FL; numerous nieces and nephews; her best friends/partners in crime, Amy Ellisor and Jimmy Moon; and an army of cats, including Puddy Tat and Jethro.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Landrum, and countless furbabies.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 30th from 2:00 until 3:00 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Rd, Columbia, SC 29223. A celebration of life will follow immediately afterwards, beginning at 3:00 o'clock.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cat Around Town Project, PO Box 1501, Camden, SC 29021, or Carolina Wildlife, 5551 Bush River Rd, Columbia, SC 29212.
