Obituary

Mrs. Susan "Sue" Strader McCutcheon, 82, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died November 9, 2017. Born in Bluefield, West Virginia on May 18, 1935, Sue was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Angel Strader. She met her husband, Ernest, while she was an education major at Duke University. Sue and Ernest enjoyed family gatherings, gardening, and travel, and lived and worked throughout the United States. She was devoted to her faith relationships within Eastminster Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and in multiple ministry areas, and was recognized as an Honorary Life Member of Presbyterian Women. Sue particularly enjoyed sharing her love of music as a member of the sanctuary and handbell choirs. She was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Columbia, a board member of the Symphony League, past president of two chapters of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Women's Club of USC, and a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

Sue is survived by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Ernest P. McCutcheon, Jr.; daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Desjardins (Jay) of Columbia; sons, Ernest P. McCutcheon III of Germany, and James S. McCutcheon (Mary) of Simpsonville, SC; grandchildren, Evann, Tenley, Senna Rose, Natalie, Shelly, Tyler, Adam, and Alex; and great-grandchildren, Billy, Wyatt, Carlotta and Anatol.

A service for Sue will be held November 16th at 2 o'clock at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC, with Dr. Bradley D. Smith, Rev. Lynn A. Grandsire, and Dr. James I. St. John officiating. Members of P.E.O. are invited to serve as honorary pallbearers. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the Adult Reception Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Memorial Handbell Choir and Music Funds at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204, or the McCutcheon-Pleasants Family Fund at the University of South Carolina, USC Educational Foundation, USC Office of Gift Processing, 1027 Barnwell St., Columbia SC 29208, (803) 777-6297. The Family Fund provides scholarships for students in the USC Schools of Music and Medicine. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
