Tammie Shockley Powell Sloop

Tamara “Tammie” Shockley Powell Sloop, 72, of Columbia, SC, died on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Born in Pulaski, Virginia, on August 27, 1954, she was a daughter of Avis Blair Shockley and the late Martin John Shockley. Tammie was a graduate of Old Dominion University and later continued her education at Francis Marion University before earning her Ed.D. from the University of South Carolina. Her career was spent in public education and she was a devoted, longtime member of the congregation at Northeast United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School.

Survivors include her husband, Barry S. Sloop; daughter, Laura Cruz; step-daughter, Rebecca Sloop; step-son, Christopher Sloop; granddaughter, Brawley Sloop; brother, Barry Shockley (Diana); niece, Michelle Brooks; and nephew, Michael Shockley. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lawrence N. Powell.

The service for Tammie will be held at 2 o’clock, Saturday, September 12th, at Northeast United Methodist Church, with Rev. Antoinette Gaboton-Moss officiating. A reception will immediately follow at the Church. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
