Obituary

Thomas C. Alewine, Sr., 91, of Columbia, died Thursday, October 27, 2022. Born June 17, 1931, in Reidsville, NC, he was a son of the late Thurman E. Alewine of Anderson, SC, and Lina Bodenheimer Alewine of Reidsville, NC.

Tom was happily married to his loving wife, Anne Higgins Alewine, for 63 years before her death in 2020. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, George G. Alewine, CPO Charles D. Alewine, US Coast Guard (Ret.), and sister, Shirley Alewine Aubin.
Survivors include his brother, Robert E. Alewine (Gail); children, Thomas C. Alewine, Jr. (Jill), David B. Alewine (Margaret), Patricia A. Alewine, and Theresa A. Hiott (Al); grandchildren, Morgan Slaton Bryant (Zachary), Trevor Alewine, and Anthony Jackson; as well as great grandchildren, Cohen, Anna Kate, and Nathan Bryant.

Tom was a graduate of The University of Denver where he received his BSBA degree in accounting. He would later earn a master's degree in business administration from The University of South Carolina. He served in the US Army for six years and the US Air Force for four years. Following his service in the US Air Force, he was employed by IBM, first as a systems engineer and then as an instructor and instruction manager. Subsequently, Tom joined Haskins & Sells, CPAs as a management consultant in financial applications. With them, he provided services to the State of South Carolina, City of Atlanta, and The University of South Carolina, among many others. He would later become Assistant Director of Computer Services at The University of South Carolina, assistant to the State Auditor of South Carolina, and assistant to James B. Edwards, republican Governor of South Carolina. Following those services, he formed Alewine & Associates to provide computer development services and later income tax accounting and preparation.

He was a member of the Data Processing Management Association (DPMA), Association for Systems Management (ASM), of which he was president of the Columbia chapter, and National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA), where he was president of the South Carolina state association. Tom loved to sing and performed with the Palmetto Mastersingers for 25 years and, for an extended period, sang with both the Columbia Choral Society and The University of South Carolina Summer Chorus. Tom was active in the Jaycees in Bangor, Maine. In Columbia, he served on the board of directors for the Township Auditorium, Family Service Center, and South Carolina TB Association. He was a devout Christian and fortunate to be a charter member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Columbia.
