Thomas Roger Cross, 86, of Columbia, died Saturday, September 1, 2018. A son of John Francis Cross and Constance Emerance Jankowski, he was born in Toledo, Ohio. Tom graduated from the University of Detroit with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration from California State College Fullerton. A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant.
Tom and his wife Sherrill (Kramer) met while students at U of D. After marrying and graduating, they moved to southern California and lived there for 14 years before relocating to Columbia. In addition to his wife of 61 years,
Tom is survived by his children; Catherine Beck (Keith) of Bigfork, MT, Karen Berry (Kent) of Hilton Head Island, SC, Susan Cross of Alpharetta, GA, Stephen Cross (Alison) of Dallas, TX, Alison Wasse of Greenville, SC and seven grandchildren; Sarah and Emily, Riley and Ian, Claire, Natalie and Patrick. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joanna O'Rourke; and twin brother, Walter Cross.
Tom and his wife were founding members of St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Tom also volunteered at the VA Hospital for many years as a shuttle driver. For the last 20 years, the highlight of each year was a fishing trip to Canada with his brother, nephew and friends.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 pm Tuesday, September 4th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, September 5th, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church with Father Alexander McDonald officiating. Final commendation and farewell prayers will be said at 10:00 am, Thursday, September 6th, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
