Obituary

Claudia Clarke McNair, fondly known as Toddie, beloved wife of E. Chandler McNair, died June 7, 2017, in Columbia, South Carolina. She passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family after a 21 month battle with leukemia which she fought with the utmost grace, courage, and determination.

Toddie was born on December 23, 1941. She was the only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel L. Clarke, Sr., of Columbia, South Carolina. Toddie was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church where she and her siblings and cousins represented the fourth generation of their family. She was married to Chandler for 54 years. Their marriage was an exemplary one, built on love and respect.

Toddie leaves, to all fortunate enough to call her their wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, a legacy of physical and spiritual strength, of unselfish love and joy, and unwavering devotion to the Lord Jesus.

Throughout her life, Toddie touched many lives with her genuine inner joy and loving compassion for others, always putting those before herself. She loved to cook, care for her home, tend her gardens, read avidly and paint. She immensely enjoyed participating in her Sunday school class and church circle as well as various social clubs and organizations in Columbia. However, the majority of her time was devoted to those of whom she was most proud, her husband, children, and grandchildren. To them she bestowed her steadfast and unconditional love, support, and loyalty.

She is survived by her husband, E. Chandler McNair; her three children, Marion McNair Coleman (Creighton), Irene McNair Trotter (Logan), and Chandler Clarke McNair (Robin); nine grandchildren, Creighton Buchanan Coleman, Jr., Chandler McNair Coleman, William Logan Trotter, Jr., Claudia Clarke Trotter, Marion Walker Coleman, Chandler Christian Trotter, Emily Adele McNair, Sarah Helen Irene McNair, and Toddie Chandler McNair. Also surviving are her brothers, Samuel L. Clarke, Jr., and Joseph Walker Clarke; her aunts and uncles, Mrs. And Mrs. John S. Walker, and Mr. and Mrs. Felix D. Walker; and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family wishes to thank her doctors and nurses at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital and at SCOA for their loving care and compassion.

Her funeral service will be held 11 o'clock, Saturday, June 10th at First Presbyterian Church, 1324 Marion Street, Columbia, with Dr. John R. de Witt and The Rev. David L. Lauten officiating. Interment will follow in the churchyard. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Friday evening in Jackson Hall of First Presbyterian Church.
