Tom L. Austin, M.D., 82, of Blythewood, died Wednesday, June 8, 2022. Born August 28, 1939, in Alice, Texas, he was a son of the late Eugene Audie and Mildred Laxson Austin.
Tom received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. He would later earn his Doctorate in Medicine from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. Following his residency at The Johns Hopkin Hospital in Baltimore, MD, he would have a long and successful career as a Neonatologist in Columbia, working concurrently for Richland Memorial Hospital and Lexington Medical Center.
Tom was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and wildlife photography. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbia and was awarded The Order of the Palmetto by Governor Mark Sanford in 2003.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby C. Austin; daughter, Cathy Roberts (Carey) of Lynchburg, VA, and twin sons, Tim Austin (Catherine) of Abbeville, SC, and Tom Austin (Rebecca) of Columbia. He is also survived by his thirteen grandchildren, Sutton Roberts, Austin Roberts, Russell Roberts, Laura Austin-Rawlings (Noah), James Austin, Thomas Austin, Caroline Austin, Benjamin Austin, David Austin, Susanna Austin, Jack Austin, Ruby Austin, and Mary Austin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Joel Austin, and Miki March.
The funeral service for Tom will be held at 1 o'clock, Monday, June 13th in Boyce Chapel at First Baptist Church, 1306 Hampton St, Columbia, SC 29201. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, 501 Elmwood Ave, Columbia, SC 29201.
The family will receive friends prior to the service in Boyce Chapel beginning at 11:30 o'clock.
