Obituary

Verdie Lewis Wells Christmus, 92, of Columbia, died Sunday, December 6, 2020. Born December 15, 1927, in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late William Henry and Mary McFarland Wells.

Mrs. Christmus graduated from Dentsville High School and later earned an associate degree from Columbia Commercial College. She met her future husband, Dan Christmus, following his military service, while they were both employed at R. L. Bryan. They married on December 22, 1946, and she continued her work at R.L. Bryan until she began raising her children. Later Mrs. Christmas returned to work at SCE&G and retired with more than 24 years of service in the communications department. Mrs. Christmus was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a woman of great faith who trusted in Jesus and loved and cared for others. She was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church for more than 20 years and joined First Presbyterian Church in 1998. While at both churches, she was active in many church activities, including ladies' circles and missionary groups.

Survivors include her husband of 73 years, Dan Christmus; four sons, Daniel Lewis Christmus (Gaye) of Columbia, Mark Wells Christmus (Elizabeth) of Pomaria, Matthew Dean Christmus (Sherri) of Clover, and John Luke Christmus, Sr. (Sandy) of Blythewood; grandchildren, Nathan (Jill), Sarah (William), Ben, Sam, Nick, Seth, Haleigh (Thomas), John Luke, Jr. (Sarah), and Cullen; seven great grandchildren; brother, Monty M. Wells (Sandra); sister-in-law, Mary Wells; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert M. Wells and William Henry "Billy" Wells, Jr.; sisters, Edna Earl Wells and Mary Helen Walhood; and brother-in-law, Gordon Walhood.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, services will be private. The Rev. David H. Lauten will officiate. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
