Virginia Frances Hagood Gibbes died peacefully at the age of 91 on April 20, 2024 surrounded by her family. Born on September 2, 1932, to James Frank and Virginia Hagood. Frances was an accomplished student with BA and a master's degree in library science from the University of South Carolina. As a student, she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Kappa Delta Sorority. Upon graduation, Frances had a full professional life where she worked as an architectural draftman with LBCW, Media Specialist with Dent Middle School and Adjunct Professor at Midlands Technical College. Frances enjoyed painting, playing bridge, and reading in her spare time. Additionally, Frances was a member of the DAR, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Daughter of the Holy Cross docent and Forest Lake Country Club. Frances shared a love of travel with her husband and traveled the world spending large amounts of time domestically and overseas. Notably, she and her husband were founding members of Doonbeg Golf Club in Ireland.
Frances is predeceased by her husband of 64 years, William H. Gibbes, son, Richard Hagood Gibbes, parents, Frank and Virgina Hagood, and sister, Eleanor Hagood Gaines. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Gibbes Haynes (Jay), granddaughters, Maryann Haynes Tripp (Lance) and Savanna Haynes Dorsey (Matt), son, William Gibbes Jr., sister, Judy Hagood Tighe (Mike) and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to send their gratitude to the staff at Still Hopes Episcopal Community for the care they gave Frances.
The service for Mrs. Gibbes will be held at 1 o'clock, Wednesday, April 24th, in the Keenan Chapel at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Interment will follow in the Church Columbarium. Following the interment, the family will receive friends in the Sterling Room at the Cathedral. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
