Columbia - Marion Virginia Trapp Moore, widow of Alonzo Renfroe "Buddy" Moore, died Sunday, May 1, 2016. She was born on November 1, 1923 in Richland County to the late Clyde Howell Trapp, Sr., and Henry Buckheister Trapp.
Virginia attended Hyatt Park, Columbia High School, and the University of South Carolina where she studied journalism. As editor of "Columbia High Lites" during high school, she published a column "Ginger Snaps by Ginger Trapp." Walter Winchell was impressed and mentioned it in his syndicated column in the early 1940's. After college, she and her dear friend Mildred Ward Monteith published a small paper in the Eau Claire area for several years. All of her life she was a voracious reader of police procedural mysteries. She was erudite, witty, and held strong opinions concerning just about everything; and their home was frequently the gathering scene of family, friends, and neighbors.
Shortly after their marriage on Valentine's Day in 1943, Buddy was drafted and assigned to the Army Air Corps. From that day until the end of the war, Virginia followed him wherever she could. They returned to Columbia where Buddy completed his college degree and together they started their family. Except for a brief sojourn for work in Tampa, Florida, Virginia and Buddy made their home in Forest Acres. Virginia worked for the clerk of the S.C. Supreme Court, J.B. Westbrook, for the Associated Press, and retired as Public Information Officer for School District One. She and her family belonged to Kilbourne Park Baptist Church.
Virginia is survived by her daughter, Susan Moore Gardner and husband, Ken; sons, Mitchell Alonzo Moore and Marshall Trapp Moore and wife, Alison; grandchildren, Meredith Gardner, Geoff Gardner and wife, Samantha, and Greg Gardner and wife, Ellen Richardson; great grandchildren, Grayson Gardner, Harrison Gardner, Elle Gardner, and Finn Gardner. She is also survived by a sister, Elise Trapp Foster and husband, Dugan; sister-in-law, Ethel Trapp; and nephew, Mark Foster and wife, Tina. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother C. Howell Trapp, Jr.
A memorial service to celebrate Virginia's life will be held 1 o'clock, Saturday, May 14th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext, Columbia with Rev. Terry Smoak officiating. The family will greet visitors after the service at the Foster home, 4025 Kilbourne Rd. Columbia. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
