Virginia McGowan Smith passed away peacefully on February 26, 2024. Gin was born in Columbia, SC on March 8, 1938. She was a graduate of Columbia High School (1956) and of Converse College (1960) where she received degrees in mathematics and hearing-impaired education. She taught for Richland School District One for thirty-six years in their Hearing Impaired Program.

She married Bronnie in 1960. She was a third-generation member of First Presbyterian Church. In addition to her husband, survivors include Clark Smith, Holly Gentry, Susan Bissell, grandsons Michael Smith and Patrick Henson, two granddaughters, and six great grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held at 2pm on February 29, 2024 in the Smith Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 1420 Washington St., Columbia, SC. The Reverend David H. Lauten and Reverend Mike Sears will officiate. A family burial service will be held in the churchyard that morning. The family will receive friends in Jackson Hall following the service. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
