Mrs. Cynthia Virginia Whitener Yoder, 88 of Columbia, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2023. Born in Lincolnton, North Carolina, on April 28, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Shuford Whitener, Sr. and Eva Goforth Whitener.

Virginia was a career military wife, homemaker, devout Christian and a dear friend to many. She was a faithful member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church and the Winsome Sunday School Class. Later in life she worked for the U.S. Government and retired from the Department of Finance at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. She loved holidays and enjoyed preparing Sunday dinners for her family. She was talented in all forms of needlecrafts and spent many hours knitting and crocheting. She will always be remembered for sending yearly birthday cards to her many friends and family members.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, retired MSG Ray Elliott Yoder; her brothers, Jacob Shuford Whitener, Jr. and Albert Anthony Whitener; and her sister, Eleanor Gay Ramseur. She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia Yoder Nance (Francis) of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Wynn Allison Fleming (Bill) of Blythewood, South Carolina; grandchildren, David Graham Young (Neel), Elliott Ross Young (Danielle) and Allison Brenna Fleming; and great-grandchildren, Carrie, Hayes, Amelia and Ellie Young. She is also survived by brothers, Terry Allison Whitener (Tamera) and Robert Daniel Whitener; and sister-in-law, Ruth Mayme Whitener, all of Lincolnton, North Carolina.

The funeral service for Mrs. Yoder will be held on December 11, 2023, at 12:30 at
Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, 4205 Kilbourne Road, Columbia, South Carolina. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the church sanctuary beginning at 11:30. Burial will follow at 2:00 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
