W. Alexander Snead, III
Columbia – Whitford Alexander "Alex" Snead, III, 53, of Columbia, died Sunday, December 20, 2015. In keeping with his straightforward, no-nonsense approach to life, Alex requested that his obituary be limited to the basic facts. He was born in Columbia, on November 9, 1962 to Whitford Alexander "Sandy" Snead Jr., and Mary Dunlap Snead. He is survived by his father, his mother, and stepfather, Phil Dematteis, of Columbia; his brothers, Thomas West Snead of Charlotte, Zachary Long Snead, and sister-in-law, Nikki Brown Snead; niece and nephew, Lilly and Zachary Snead, all of Columbia; uncles, Dr. Benjamin Bernard Dunlap, Jr. and his wife, Anne Boyd Dunlap, of Columbus, NC, and B. Randolph Dunlap and his wife, Hope Gettys Dunlap, of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Benjamin Bernard Dunlap and Beverly Jones Dunlap Spong; and paternal grandparents, Alex Snead, and Helen Cox Snead.
The family will receive friends at the home of Zach and Nikki Snead, 1710 East Buchanan Drive, Columbia from 5 until 7 o'clock, Tuesday, December 22nd. A private burial will be held at a later date.
The family expresses its gratitude to Dr. Charles Butler, and the staff of South Carolina Oncology Associates, and to the wonderful Cecil, Anne, Maggie, and Jo of Tri-County Hospice for their unstinting care of Alex.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the charity of one's choice. Alex was a lifelong lover of animals, so a donation to one of the many groups devoted to the rescue of animals would be particularly appropriate.
Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
