Sonny was a 1959 graduate of Columbia High School and also a member of the 1958/59 State Championship football team. During the later part of his senior year, he was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma of the right leg. His leg was amputated above the knee and during his recovery and rehab, he became interested in building orthopedic appliances which led to a career of over 50 years. He worked building artificial limbs and braces at Columbia Brace & Boot, then at the Dorn VA Hospital, from which he retired. He then worked part time at Palmetto Brace until 2021, when his health no longer allowed it.
He also learned to play the guitar during his amputation recovery. He sang and played with different groups around Columbia, mainly VFWs, the Mouse Trap, and Bill's Pickin' Parlor. Sonny was a member of Eau Claire Baptist Church and a former deacon and choir member. He also played on the softball team. We will all miss Sonny in so many ways, especially his singing.
