Walter Shields Monteith, Jr., 78, of Columbia died Wednesday, February 5, 2025. Born in Columbia on September 9, 1946, he was the son of the late Walter Shields and Susan Campbell Monteith. Mr. Monteith graduated from Dreher High School in 1964 and the University of South Carolina in 1969 where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Walter worked as a commercial real estate broker with Edens & Avant and later NAI Avant for over 40 years and had a devoted and loyal client base that depended on his expertise for locating new stores in existing and expanding markets in the southeast. In addition to his real estate career, Walter enjoyed traveling and spending time with many close friends, particularly at an annual gathering beginning in 1972 where his culinary skills were essential and legendary.
He was a past member of Forest Lake Club, Palmetto Club and many other civic and social organizations. An avid Gamecock fan, he will be remembered by family and friends as honest, extremely loyal and a true friend in every way.
Mr. Monteith is survived by his daughters, Shields Morgan (Thomas) of Charleston, Liz Sharpe (Clay) of Columbia, and Sarah Rama (Michael) of Columbia; grandchildren, Cordes Morgan, Julia Morgan, Campbell Sharpe, Charlie Sharpe, Sazy Sharpe, Walter Rama, Salley Rama, and Teddy Rama; and many special friends and family members. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Susan Campbell Monteith.
A graveside service will be held at 3 o'clock pm, Monday, February 10th at Elmwood Cemetery. A drop-in to celebrate Walter will be held immediately following the graveside service at the home of Sarah and Michael Rama, 4805 Portobello Road, Columbia.
