A service for Walter E. "Gene" Turner, 89, of Lexington, will be held 2 o'clock, Saturday, June 15th, in the Boyce Chapel of First Baptist Church of Columbia, 1306 Hampton Street, with The Rev. Dennis Banks officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church in Ellis Hall, prior to the service, beginning at 1 o'clock. Gene died Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at his home in Lexington, surrounded by his family. A native of Columbia, he was a son of the late Paul Crawford Turner and Linne Goldson Turner. He graduated from the old Columbia High School, and went on to graduate with honors from the University of South Carolina with a degree in business. Gene enjoyed a successful career as an auditor and district supervisor with the South Carolina Tax Commission, retiring in 1985 after 31 years of service. A US Army veteran of WWII, Gene received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Woodmen of the World, a former member of the National Exchange Club, and a long-time member of the USC Gamecock Club. Gene was also a member of First Baptist Church of Columbia.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Devon White Turner; daughter, Terry T. (Steve) Adams of Boerne, TX; sons, Larry E. (Nancy) Turner of Blythewood, and Kevin W. (Ellen) Turner of Blue Springs, MO; grandchildren, Jaime (Brian) Adams of Bulverde, TX, Brandon Turner of Columbia, SC, and Jacob Turner of Blue Springs, MO; and great-grandchildren, Joshua and Samuel; aunt, Margaret (George) Holladay; cousins, Dot Goldson and H.L. Goldson; nephews, Roy Neville, Jr., John Neville and Paul "Buster" Turner, Jr.. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Monroe Turner; and sister, Pearl Turner Neville.
