Obituary

Wayne Thomas Lineberger, 76, of Chapin, died Sunday, February 4, 2024. Born August 13, 1947, in Jacksonville, FL, he was a son of the late Francis M. and Margaret Watson Lineberger. Although Mr. Lineberger was born in Florida and spent over half of his adult life overseas, in his heart he was always a South Carolinian. He was a graduate of Eau Claire High School, Class of '65, Wofford College, Class of ' 69, and held a master's degree from the University of South Carolina. He was a US Army veteran who proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. Mr. Lineberger worked as a Richland County Deputy Sheriff and Investigator, Chief of Campus Police at Morris Village, as well as a Chief Investigator for the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. He was the first director of the South Carolina United Methodist Conference's Sewee Coastal Retreat Center. In 1988, he volunteered for the Peace Corps and served in Paraguay. After his two-year service Mr. Lineberger homesteaded in Paraguay and remained there for 24 years as an independent businessman. After he retired, he moved to Costa Rica where he lived over four years before returning to South Carolina. All his life he enjoyed singing and dancing and motorcycles. He had no children but dearly loved his family and had many friends all over the Americas.

Survivors include his sisters, Becky Lineberger Buie (Franklin) of Columbia and Janice Lineberger Carter of Durham, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Watson Lineberger.

The memorial service for Mr. Lineberger will be held at 1:30 o'clock, Monday, February 12th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC with Rev. Franklin B. Buie and Rev. Ken Kennerly officiating. The burial will follow at 3 o'clock at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Rd., Columbia, SC.

The family will receive guests at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 12:30 o'clock.
