Dr. Wayne Thompson Metzger, 67, of Irmo, died Thursday, May 5, 2016. Born in Savannah, GA on October 31, 1948, he was the only child of the late Robert Justice Metzger and Ruth Thompson Metzger.
Dr. Metzger attended Chicora High School, in Charleston, and The University of South Carolina where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a graduate of The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and was a Fellow of Endocrinology at UCLA, Harbor General, Los Angeles. Dr. Metzger was Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. He taught at The USC School of Medicine in Columbia and was in private practice at Palmetto Internal Medicine. Dr. Metzger loved his Lord, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was currently serving as an usher, and previously taught the five-year-old Sunday school classes. He was an avid sportsman, a certified shooting instructor and greatly enjoyed traveling the world with his wife of 35 years, Emily, especially when the destination involved game birds.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by special cousins, Robin Hiott Nichols and Mark Hiott of Savannah.
A service will be held 1:30 o'clock, Monday, May 9th at First Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow in Jackson Hall. Burial in the Churchyard will be private. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1324 Marion Street, Columbia, SC 29201. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
