Whitford Alexander "Sandy" Snead Jr., 84, of Columbia, died on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on December 26, 1940, he was a son of the late Whitford Alexander Snead and Helen May Cox Snead.

Sandy grew up as a competitive golfer in Rockingham, North Carolina. He attended Darlington School in Rome, Georgia, and qualified for the 1959 PGA Azalea Open as a senior. He attended Duke University on a golf scholarship before transferring to the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity and the USC Golf Team. He was on the 1964 USC Golf Team that won the 1964 ACC Championship. He passionately supported his sons' youth sporting teams and served as president of the Palmetto Baseball League.
Sandy had a varied career, including selling residential and commercial real estate, owning and operating the Palmetto Square Office Supplies and Bookstore, and working with Christ Central Ministries.

His free time included attending Gamecock sporting events, dancing the shag, playing golf, and listening to beach music.

Survivors include his sons, Thomas West Snead and Zachary Long Snead (Nikki); grandchildren, Lilly and Zachary Snead; and the mother of his children, Mary Dunlap Snead Dematteis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Whitford Alexander Snead III.

A visitation for Sandy will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Extension, Columbia.
