Columbia - William Edwin "Eddie" Moore died peacefully on July 21, 2017, surrounded by his family at the age of 85. Eddie was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Harriet Frick Moore. Eddie is lovingly remembered by his sons and their wives Michael and Michele Moore, Edwin and Maura Moore, and Jason and Amanda Moore; grandchildren, McLean, Wilson, Ellie, Lillian, Hamilton, Cody, and Clair; and step grandchildren, TJ and Bryce Overcash and Matthew and Noah Jones.
Eddie was born in Columbia, SC on July 20, 1932, to the late Edwin K. and Frances K. Moore. He graduated from Columbia High School where he played in the band in 1950. Eddie served in the Army National Guard and the US Navy, where he was stationed on the USS Hector. Following his military service, he attended the University of South Carolina where he received his Master's Degree in Engineering. He was employed briefly by NASA in Virginia Beach, VA prior to returning to Columbia to join SCE&G where he later retired as Vice President of Fossil and Hydroelectric Operations.
Eddie was well known for his service to the community. He served as a Scoutmaster for many years, where he received the Silver Beaver Award for the Indian Waters Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Eddie served as President of the North Columbia Optimist Club and was extremely dedicated to serving as a council member and Sunday school teacher at Ebenezer Lutheran Church. In 1985, he received SCE&G's People Helping People Award for his service to young people. In his later years, he and his wife spent much of their time volunteering for the Salvation Army, helping the homeless in Columbia.
Eddie was devoted to his wife, his family, his country and his Lord. He greeted everyone with a smile and a wry sense of humor. He never met a stranger and once stated that he wanted to be remembered for loving people, hamburgers, and sweet tea. He also thoroughly enjoyed a large bowl of butter pecan ice cream.
The funeral service for Mr. Moore will be held at 10 o'clock, Wednesday, July 26th at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 1301 Richland Street, Columbia with The Rev. Mel Amundson officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 4 until 6 o'clock at Ebenezer Lutheran Church Reception Room. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is in charge.
