William "Bill" Maxwell Gregg II died peacefully September 11, 2022 in the Augusta, GA Burn Center following an accident on August 18, 2022.
Bill was born on July 10, 1948 in Bennettsville, SC to Walter Watt Gregg and Saress Ellerbe Gregg. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1972. Following graduation he settled in Columbia, SC and founded South Carolina Tees Inc. which became one of the largest sportswear distributors in the nation and an appreciative part time employer of many USC students through the years.
Bill supported Boy Scouts of America and was an Eagle Scout. He also was an ardent supporter of the University of South Carolina and served on the University Board of Trustees. Bill created the Gregg Endowment for Carolina Scholars honoring the South Carolina signers of the Constitution of the United States in 1787 reflecting his lifelong interest in history and his pride of South Carolina. In 1990 Bill (B.S. '72 finance) was a recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Award which is presented to alumni of the Moore School with outstanding achievements in business, academia, government or not-for-profit organizations." Having attended Duke University and being a very loyal fan of the Blue Devils, Bill honored his time there by establishing a Trinity Scholarship awarded to undergraduate students whose legal residence is within the state of South Carolina. Always a supporter of his beloved Pee Dee, Bill asked that first preference be given to students from Marlboro County, then the Pee Dee area counties.
Bill is survived his four children of whom he was so proud: Ellerbe Somers Gregg Zaychik (Steve) of Atlanta, GA; William Johnstone Maxwell Gregg (Lauryn Schubiger), and John David Johnston Gregg (McNair Zervos) of Columbia; and James Alexander "Alec" Buist Gregg of Greenville, SC.; two grandchildren Jacob and Margot Zaychik, his twin sister Mrs. William N. Smith (Ginger), a brother Walter Watt Gregg, Jr. of Columbia and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Saress Ellerbe (Bunny) Gregg Marshall and her husband Richard Hugh Marshall, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Walter Gregg, Jr. (Ann Kemp) and brother-in-law William "Bill" Nicholson Smith.
The family will receive visitors from 5:00 until 7:30 on September 14, 2022 at the home of John and McNair Gregg, 136 Old Mill Circle. The graveside service will be held at 2:00 Thursday at Sunset Memorial Park 1200 W Main St, Bennettsville, SC 29512. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
