William Francis McDonald

William Francis McDonald, 78, of Columbia, died Saturday, June 6, 2026. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of the late Francis Thomas McDonald and Rita Catherine Thevenard McDonald.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam conflict and was awarded a bronze medal for his service. After his military career, Will had his hand in several careers before entering the field of information technology and retired as an IT manager with Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Will had a deep love for sports, especially golf, Chicago football and baseball and was also a devoted Gamecock fan. For many years, he and his wife Gail organized a golf outing at Devil's Head Resort in Wisconsin. Spending time at the beach with his family was one of his favorite pastimes where he served on the HOA Board of Patricia Grand Myrtle Beach, SC.

Will was completely devoted to his family, especially to his wife Gail. Will will be remembered for his laid-back warm, kindhearted personality. He never met a stranger, and everyone held him in high regards. He will hold a place in everyone's heart forever.

He is survived by his wife, Gail Scott Brazell McDonald; daughters, Rachael (Matt) Stricker and Megan McDonald, both of Wisconsin; stepsons, Charles Brazell and Scott (Candace) Brazell of South Carolina; grandchildren, Emma, Sarah, Jayseon Stricker, and Lacey and Scott, Jr. Brazell; siblings, Mary Grace (Wally) Tizura, Mike (Pat) McDonald, Katie Mormolstein McDonald, and Joe (Lynn) McDonald, all of Chicago; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.

The family invites you to help them celebrate his life on Friday, June 19, from 4 pm until 8 pm at Valhalla Woods Golf Club, 100 Norse Way, Columbia, SC.
