Yvonne Mardenia Johnson

Yvonne Mardenia Johnson, 78, died on Sunday, April 19, 2026. Born on July 1, 1947, in Alameda, California, she was the daughter of the late William Euguene Hillman, Sr. and Alma Mardenia (Dena) Gardner Hillman.

Growing up in Columbia, she developed a love for connection and community early in life. She was known for her outgoing personality, her sense of humor, and her ability to make others laugh with her naturally cute and endearing way. She truly enjoyed being around people and brought joy to many through simple, everyday interactions.

For many years, she worked as a cashier in retail sales, where her friendly nature and genuine kindness left a lasting impression on customers and coworkers alike and met her husband, Charles.

She was an avid animal lover and dedicated much of her life to rescuing and caring for stray animals. Alongside her beloved husband, Charles, they opened their home and hearts to many animals in need, giving them comfort, safety, and love.

She also always had open doors for those who needed a place to stay. She never turned down anyone who was homeless or in need.

One of her most cherished memories was traveling to Hawaii with her husband, a trip that brought her great happiness and remained close to her heart.

She is survived by her children, Brian Powell, Sr. (Jeanne), Stacie Bradley and Tammie Powell. Sister, Sherian Corwell, brother, William Eugene “Bill” Hillman, Jr. (Sally), Grandchildren, Anastasia Bethea (Rayco), Charlie Thames, Jr. (Serina), Jeffery Thames (Kimberlyn), Zachery Thames, Tristan Bradley, Brian Powell, Jr. (Alysha), Brandi Powell, 21 great grand children, nieces, nephews and her fur baby Bindi.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband Charles Edward Johnson and her son, Ronnie Eugene Powell.

A memorial service will be held at 2 o’clock on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Rock Family Worship Center by Pastor Johnny Brewington, 5041 Platt Springs Road, West Columbia, SC 29073.
The family will receive visitors at 384 Canal Place Drive, Columbia, SC 29201, following the service.
