Zaida A. Hertan, 83, of Blythewood, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2023. Born in Roxas City, Capiz, Philippines, on April 30, 1940, she was the oldest daughter of the late Rizalina Hollero and Jose Ma. Austria.
Mrs. Hertan graduated from Pangasinan Provincial High School in the class of 1956. In 1960, she earned her BSBA in marketing from the University of the Philippines and a degree in accounting from Far Eastern University in 1963. Early in her career, she worked in Manila as an accountant for many private firms. Mrs. Hertan retired in 2005 after dedicating 25 years with three different international shipping companies, and 13 years with three other non-shipping companies. Throughout this time, she held various managerial positions in accounting and finance. She was a member of the Board of Trustees for UP Alumni Association, New Jersey Chapter, American Water Transportations Association of Officers in New York, Filipino American Association of Greater Columbia, South Carolina, and a treasurer of the Filipino American Community Action Association of New Jersey.
Mrs. Hertan was an avid Yankee baseball fan. She enjoyed bowling and playing internet games. Not only was Mrs. Hertan a true businesswoman, but she was also a great homemaker. She took pride in her house plants and will be fondly remembered for her famous home cooked meals.
Survivors include her son, James Hertan (Carrie); stepchildren, Elizabeth Hertan Fidoten (Doug) and Charles Hertan (Rhonda); grandchildren, Wyatt Hertan and Ruby Hertan; stepgrandchildren, Andy Fidoten, Jacob Fidoten, Daniel Fidoten, and Emma Hertan; siblings, Arturo Austria, Nieves McNulty, Benjamin Austria (Gloria), Rolando Austria (Leilani), Susan DelaMerced, and Mila Austria. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by husband, Donald M. Hertan; brother, Jose "Joe" Ma. Austria, Jr.; and brother-in-law, George F. McNulty.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Hertan will be held at 2:30 o'clock on Thursday, June 22nd, at Transfiguration Catholic Church, 603 N Pines Road, Blythewood, SC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the reception.
An additional Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 o'clock on Tuesday, June 27th, at St. Mary's Parish, 747 West Bay Avenue, Barnegat, New Jersey. The inurnment will follow at the church columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your charity of choice. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
